The Huntingdon County Arts Council is opening its February art show on Friday, February 10 with a reception starting at 6 pm until 9 pm in the Art Space on Fourth Street in Huntingdon. The Arts Council designated February as Fiber Arts Month, and the exhibit will feature examples of fiber arts from Pennsylvania and around the world.

With help from the Redbud Quilt Guild, who have provided a variety of quilts and quilted projects for display, organizers have gathered fabrics and fabric art pieces, including Malaysian batik, South American Mola and fabric dolls as created by Steve and Jamie Isenberg of Huntingdon. Woven examples include an eastern European Kilim, a Moroccan weaving, a section created on a South American backstrap loom and various traditional woven throws.

Pam Kavanaugh and Ginny Mutti display their recent works knitted from wool raised near Altoona and Huntingdon. Information on various fiber art groups will be available at the exhibition. The Arts Council will host a spinning and weaving demonstration later in February.

The Huntingdon County Arts Council will be hosting world class Spanish style guitarist David Burgess for a performance at the Stone Church of the Brethren on March 9 at 7:30 pm.

David Burgess is recognized as one of today’s outstanding guitarists. His international appearances as soloist and chamber musician have taken him to concert halls throughout North and South America, Europe and the Far East. Highlights of recent seasons include several concert tours of Europe, repeated recitals in New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Baltimore, Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Denver, Phoenix, and Nashville, along with numerous appearances as an orchestral soloist, including featured performances with the Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York, and the American Chamber Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

First prize winner in the Andrés Segovia Fellowship Competition in New York City, he has also won top honors in the Ponce International Competition in Mexico City, the Guitar ‘81 Competition in Toronto and the 31st International Music Competition in Munich.

Mr. Burgess began studying guitar at the Estudio de Arte Guitarrístico in Mexico City with the renowned Argentine guitarist Manuel López Ramos. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music at the University of Washington, and later earned a Diploma di Merito, while on full scholarship at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy where he studied with Oscar Ghiglia. From 1984-1987 he periodically received classes from the great Spanish maestro, Andrés Segovia.

Through his extensive travels in both Spain and Latin America, Mr. Burgess has explored traditional guitar styles, along with many popular and folkloric types of music. He has acquired one of the largest collections of Latin American guitar music in the U.S., from which he often draws interesting and unusual works for his programs.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door, at the Art Space during regular hours, or ONLINE.

This show features paintings the artist developed and created over the last year, depicting the months of the year. Dietz, a self taught visual artists from Huntingdon County and currently living in Williamsburg, PA, has worked on a multitude of projects ranging from murals to theater sets across the region.

The “calendar” theme features nature scenes, flora and fauna with relevance to central Pennsylvania, and a painting style reminiscent of the flowing forms of the early twentieth century art nouveau.

The Huntingdon County Arts Council encouraged the artist in this project and is reproducing the artwork in a calendar format. The Arts Council will take orders until Thanksgiving and will have the calendar available for sale in the Art Space during the month of December.

Description:

The Art of Illustration will open at the Art Space at 212 Fourth Street in Huntingdon on Friday, October 14. A reception with refreshments will be held on Friday evening from 6 to 9 pm. Artists Suzanne Beaky and Jay Hosler plan to attend the opening. The exhibition will be open during regular hours at the Art Space on Tuesdays, and Thursdays through Saturdays until November 15.

The exhibition will show works by three book illustrators, Chris Raschka, Suzanne Beaky and Jay Hosler, all with a Huntingdon connection but varying styles. The exhibition consists of a selection of original and reproduced works in reference to published works by each artist. “We hope to provide a ‘behind the scenes glimpse’ at the work and artistry of illustrators”, says Ilona Ballreich, Executive Director of the Huntingdon County Arts Council. “We are very fortunate to have access to this caliber of professionalism in art in Huntingdon”.

Chris Raschka should be a familiar name in Huntingdon – the children’s book author and illustrator is a ‘local’ after all, and has given numerous school and public talks about his art and profession. Raschka was born here, son of the late scholar and educator Donald Durnbaugh and linguist Hedda Durnbaugh who continues to be an active volunteer in the Juniata College Library. And while his travels and life took him across the globe, and he eventually settled in New York City with his wife and son, his love for books remained a constant.

Throughout his career Raschka has received many awards and recognitions for his work, including the Caldecott Honor Book Award and the UNICEF-Ezra Jack Keats award, both for Yo! Yes? and his most prestigious award to date, the Caldecott Medal in 2006 for his illustrations in The Hello, Goodbye Window. The Caldecott Medal is awarded every year by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children, published in the preceding year. This month Raschka’s first middle-grade novel, Seriously, Norman! will appear in bookstores nationwide.

Her newest illustrations of The Busy Life of Ernestine Buckmeister by Linda Lodding have been lauded as “most delightful and the characters” “expressions as poignant without becoming exaggerated”. And it has just been announced that the book appears in the 2011 ABC Best of Books Catalog a resource for independent book sellers.

Suzanne Beaky grew up in Gahanna, Ohio, and studied illustration at Columbus College of Art and Design. Her expressive illustrations are commissioned by children’s book, magazine and educational publishers worldwide. She received the Durham (N.C.) Arts Council Emerging Artist Award and the Ellen Dolan Memorial Mentorship Award from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators-Missouri. Please check our website for an upcoming presentation and book signing by Suzanne.

A self proclaimed ‘doodler’, with a lifelong passion for comics, Jay Hosler is best known for his graphic novels about honey bees (Clan Apis) and a follicle mite living in Darwin’s left eyebrow (The Sandwalk Adventures). Read between the lines and his ‘day job’ as an entomologist and associate professor of biology at Juniata College, becomes evident. Indeed, Hosler has found a common denominator as author and illustrator of science-oriented comics. His artistry also ventures into the more mundane, in just a few weeks, Huntingdon soccer players will sport his latest design for the annual “Socctober” T-shirt.

His work has been noted in the press, on TV and radio and has been supported by the National Science Foundation. Jay Hosler lives with his wife and sons Max and Jack just north of Huntingdon.

Julia Spicher Kasdorf to Read from her New Book Poetry in America

Accomplished writer, scholar and poet Julia Spicher Kasdorf will visit The Art Space in Huntingdon on Sunday, October 16 at 3 pm for a public reading of selections from her new work, Poetry in America. The collection of poems was in part inspired by her experiences as a writer, mother, and traveler in Pennsylvania. Her reading in Huntingdon will relate to the region and follow up with a discussion of the challenges and importance of writing about particular places and people. Some of the poems read will be about the same area and people that Joseph Yoder described in his book, Rosanna of the Amish, subject of an earlier Kasdorf presentation. Although not necessary, the audience may prepare for the afternoon by watching the PNC show or reading ROSANNA.

Poet Julia Spicher Kasdorf once said in an interview that “nothing

is a bad topic for a strong writer” . . . apparently not even garlic, a 1978 Chevy or cardio-kickboxing, all topics featured in her new collection Poetry in America. Kasdorf, associate professor of English and Women’s Studies at Pennsylvania State University, was born in Central Pennsylvania and raised in a suburb of Pittsburgh. Poetry in America includes several nods to life in Pittsburgh and other locales in Pennsylvania.

Poet Eamon Grennan said, “I admire Julia Kasdorf’s poems for their alert eye, attentive mind, vigilant heart, all fused into a single, sometimes painfully aware, vision of the world. Bristling with narrative surfaces, angular emotional interiors, humorous sympathies, her poems move in careful zigzags. Plainspoken, both intimate and discreet, these poems take hold.”

Kasdorf is the author of two previous poetry collections: Eve’s Striptease and Sleeping Preacher, which won the 1991 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize and the Great Lakes Colleges Award for New Writing in 1993. Kasdorf’s poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Paris Review, and Poetry, as well as numerous anthologies, including the 2003 Pushcart collection. She is also the author of The Body and the Book: Writing from a Mennonite Life 1991-1999, which won the Book of the Year Award from the Modern

Language Association’s Conference on Christianity and Literature, and Fixing Tradition: Joseph W. Yoder, Amish American.

This presentation is free and open to the public. The Art Space is located at 212 4th Street in downtown Huntingdon. Doors will open at 2:30 pm on Sunday, October 16 and the presentation will conclude with an informal reception.

Poetry in America is published by the University of Pittsburgh Press

88 pp. • 6 x 9 • ISBN 9780822961567 • Paper $15.95
